Quaint, storied bar with vintage decor serving a variety of beers, including drafts, plus cocktails....
We stumbled upon this bar rather by accident and were pleasantly surprised when entering the heavy doors. It was a rainy winter night and once we were in the bar it felt like time stopped. The ambience in this small bar is perfectly curated to be cozy and antique and I was never able to take my eyes off the beautiful decorations, the menu and the elderly couple running the bar. We drank two different gin tonics (as seen in my pictures) for 13,50 Euro each, which can be seen as a little pricy, but we reckon that the price is worth it, because the portion sizes are big and the ambience justifies the price. Take note that the bar is quite small and there is a limited amount of seats. I can recommend going here for a date or a small get together, but wouldnβt recommend or bigger groups. I would definitely come back again when visiting Amsterdam, but although i have only been here once i consider it one of my favorite bars in town.
What a lovely place! Honestly, it feels a bit surreal sitting on a bar that's about 250 years old. You wouldn't be surprised if Charles Dickens sat next to you π It's highly recommended, even if you just stay for one drink.
This place just feels old. Some of it is the super dusty birdcage and such thatβs. But mostly it has a vibe like itβs been in Amsterdam forever. Itβs a bit cramped so is easily full. But a bar seat has been available on my visits if you feel up for squeezing in. Some tables out on the street too. The people running it are friendly and helpful but also suitably clear and firm when someone starts asking odd questions.
I chose 5 stars for βfoodβ because there isnβt an option for drinks. Such a wonderfully interesting, tiny (14 seats) place. Henny (sp?) is the owner (mid 70s). Very nice fellow, gracious and fast. In addition to the beer try the Amsterdam gin and tonic. Agree with Henny to allow him to add some bits of chopped ginger. Try to estimate the depth of dust on the bird cage and chandeliers. Just a lovely place.
We were lured in based on how cozy and welcoming the bar looked and only then realised it's a typical/cultural brown bar. The bar tender/owner made everyone feel welcome and tended to! Would recommend for great bears and ambience.
