Classic cafe in former medieval bathhouse, where Mozart & Beethoven once played, serving local food....
The bald middle-aged guy and the employee with tattoos on his arms were absolutely awful and rude as hell. We walked into the restaurant and weren’t greeted at all. After 20 minutes, they finally came over, mumbling that there were no seats, sighing the whole time, and then lazily showed us to a table. Taking the order itself wasn’t a problem, but we waited an hour and one of the pies was missing. We waited another hour for that. No matter how many times we called for staff, no one responded. They kept walking back and forth near our table but completely ignored us. When someone finally came over after we’d waited forever, he didn’t even realize he’d missed the item, and didn’t apologize once. After making us wait an hour, he brought it out in 10 seconds like it was nothing. To make it worse, he thought we were calling him to pay the bill. The staff themselves had no idea what dishes had been served or what was missing, and kept asking us instead. The staff have a terrible attitude, zero manners, and the prices are expensive for this level of service.
Food is really good, however, prices are a bit steep. But considering the location I'd say is fair. We came over 2 days in a row, second day was because other restaurants in the area were full but we got a table quickly here. Service was okay but we definitely got the Viennese experience, not much attention after getting the food and impossible to get the bill the first night. I had to get up and approach both waiters and one of them basically made fun of me for doing that. We were seated at the far end so they definitely forgot about us. Food was very good but I would only come back if other restaurants are too busy, due to the service.
The schnitzel and fries were really good but the older man waiter was very rude and has terrible customer service skills. Took awhile to even acknowledge me and then just told me to look at the qr menu because I don’t speak german. And when I ordered I accidently misspoke and ordered the more expensive still mineral water and instead of regular tap water. When I asked him to take it away when he brought out because it wasn’t what I wanted, he wasn’t at all empathetic and insisted that I couldn’t change the water order when I hadn’t even laid a finger on it. He said it’s too late because it was open as if he wasn’t the one who opened it! Just difficult for no reason. Good food bad service. Not good for tourists
Highly recommended. Melange Coffee was amazing, Kaiserschmarm was ok. The apple and the plum sauces were nice but the kaiserschmarm itself was thick and kinda dry and the portions are waaay too big in my opinion. I also detest having to tip in a non tipping country
An old coffee house with a rich history. The classics were available to order, paired nicely with a nice hot cup of coffee. Though the room was a bit warm to my liking, but I was able to sit back, relax and my mind seeming traveled back in time to imagine what it was like when the Greats such as Mozart and Beethoven came in and enjoyed their afternoon snack. The place was relatively quiet, interior design simple but clean. Servers were attentive of patrons, but gave ample room to sit back without being rushed. Definitely worth a visit when in Vienna to soak in the history of this place.
