Corner bar with views of shopping street, serving drinks & snacks including the house Sacher-Torte....
Café Sacher is an iconic Viennese experience. While the famous cake is quite a simple, dry chocolate cake with jam, the ambiance is unbeatable. It is very touristic, so I highly recommend reserving a spot before 10 AM to get the best calm experience.
🔥After reading many other reviews, it’s clear that this is a recurring problem, not just a one-time mistake. I am leaving this review because I strongly believe this needs to change. It’s not something that can be excused by simply being 'busy'; it’s a fundamental issue with how they operate. I hope they take this feedback seriously.🔥 I visited for the history, but left feeling extremely disrespected. The service here was the worst I have ever experienced.🤬 I tried to make eye contact and called for a waiter multiple times just to order. After directly asking twice, they said they would be back but never returned. Getting the bill was even worse. I asked a blonde female staff member and a stout male staff member—both acknowledged me but completely ignored my request 5 times. When I finally got up to pay at the counter out of frustration, they suddenly acted as if I was trying to leave without paying. It felt like I was being deliberately targeted and ignored while other tables were served promptly. Sacher Torte was mediocre and definitely not worth this kind of treatment. The owner needs to seriously retrain the staff and look into why some customers are treated so poorly compared to others. If you want to be treated with basic respect, go somewhere else.
Edit: my husband been several times to this place before and it is not the matter of different taste but he agrees with me that the quality was way downgraded than previous years. The cake was super dry PERIOD. Nowadays, it is just another trendy place that lucks quality. ..... Seriously bad! Way overrated and the cake is so bad. I got sacher cake which is super dry and flavorless even worse it’s kinda sour!! This cake was the biggest disappointment. I got iced latte which was at first so pale in flavor then slowly started to be way too sweet to the point I couldn’t finish more 20% of it. Why that much of wiped cream!! My husband got pumpkin spice latte which was just fine 7/10 but way too over priced, nothing special very basic. The apple cake was another disappointment so pale and flavorless. We were lucky to be seated immediately but the line got quickly so packed! Definitely skip the line it’s not worth the wait nor the $$$$$ btw staff were friendly and kind .. do better you have a good location and reputation.
We waited over an hour in line, which given it’s a Christmas destination is something we expected. However when we finally do get a table one would expect the staff to treat you nicely with good service and maybe even some compassion for people having waited out in the cold for so long, however that was not the case. We tried ordering breakfast, which apparently was not possible at this hour so the waitress just left instead of staying and letting us order something else, which we were ready to do. The tea and coffee arrived way later than the cake. And I never received honey for the tea. Lots of tables inside were empty even though the line outside was really long. The Sacher torte was mediocre. Not worth the wait. I believe the people staying at the hotel receive better service since they pay more to stay there, still we waited really long to get to the cafe and we’re still paying customers for the food. I’d expect better. Also we wanted to see the lobby after eating and the doorman scolded us for going in there since we weren’t staying at the hotel. I think people should be allowed to look around in a LOBBY…
We visited Café Sacher at 9:00 PM. Even though the place was more than half empty, there was no one at the entrance and we waited about 5 minutes until someone finally showed up. When a staff member arrived, we politely asked if we could sit wherever we liked since there were plenty of available tables. She said no and directed us to a cramped table, even though there were many more comfortable options. We explained that we preferred a different table, and then she let us choose — but only from a very limited selection. The tables by the windows — where most guests were seated — were off-limits because “that area is closed,” as she said. Two other tables by the sofa were supposedly reserved. Of course, no one came to sit there during our stay — and we left nearly two hours before closing. It’s a shame that such a famous and historic café, relying heavily on tourism, shows such a lack of hospitality. When your reputation and success depend on visitors from around the world, great service should be a top priority — not your weakest point. There is a reason behind the rating this place has. Unfortunately, our experience did not live up to the café’s reputation. We hope things improve in the future.
