Weekday mornings are the quietest
Hands down, some of the best chocolate in the world. I first stopped into Astor for a cool drink and ended up ordering a lemonade with a cookie — a Linzer tart, which happens to be one of my favorite cookies. Anytime I see a Linzer tart in a display case, I have to try it. It’s my quiet benchmark, always measured against the goodness of my mother’s version. This one absolutely held its own. After the lemonade and cookie, I went out to wander the promenade and do a bit of shopping, but the rain came quickly and I ran right back inside Astor. I grabbed a table by the entrance so I could watch people rushing by, escaping the rain. I ordered a chicken soup that turned out to be surprisingly delicious, and paired it with a Frappuccino that was icy, cool, and deeply chocolatey. I finished with a chocolate heart bonbon, which, once again, did not disappoint. Before leaving, I bought several boxes of chocolates to bring back to Florida for my mother and friends. If you’re into chocolate, confections, cakes, and just genuinely good food, this is a place not to miss. It should be one of your first stops when you’re in Medellín.
I’ve frequented this restaurant a few times and had mainly their soups. They were always flavourful and great. I’m looking forward to trying some of their desserts.. they all look great. Quite a few people have commented about the service. I too found it a bit below what you would expect for an establishment such as this. You DO have to track down a waitress to get a menu and to take your order. Don’t expect anyone to ask you how your meal is. Not sure if that’s just the way it is here in Colombia or this place specifically. It obviously doesn’t matter as they have a lot of clients regardless of the much noted lack of service and this seems to be going on for a long time. On one occasion, I did walk out as I waited 15 minutes and no one even acknowledged I was sitting there.
I did not have a good meal here, despite this place being expensive for the "experience". A small egg omelet was almost 20k, which gets you a full breakfast in most places. The waitress wasn't friendly at all - a bit grumpy actually. My wife, who is Colombian had asked for a large coffee and was told it wasn't possible. And then, almost as a joke the waitress brought us a coffee mug about 1/4 full. Picture below. The omelet they brought was ok, but fried a bit too much in a funny tasting oil. My wife is Colombian and loves this place from her past, but I couldn't recommend it. I don't think I would eat here again. It's my 2nd time here, but the first time was for ice cream only - about a year ago. Around 20k for a small sundae. (It wasn't bad, but not great either.) I would much more recommend "milkshake" in Laureles, near la 70, for a good sundae.
My experience here is only for breakfast as a tourist, that being said, I would highly recommend this place for people that want an international-ish/European style breakfast with high quality local ingredients, and a pinch of the local flavours in between. The atmosphere is as good as it gets, you will find it refreshing in a Sunny day and everything is very clean and neat. You will be received by a service with a smile and making sure that you are satisfied, they won't take long to bring your order at all so that you can enjoy a freshly prepared meal. Now, the food was great, I ordered some poached eggs and overall the dish was well presented, hot enough for consumption, good portions, and delicious, the only reason I didn't give a perfect score in food is because I prefer my egg yolks runny. Pricewise I would consider it very affordable and even low price compared with the quality of the experience.
it’s one of the most iconic place in Medellin downtown, where people from all the ages and places come whether as per usual, or poo by to get to know this place. the service was great by amanda, and the food was very good, also can be improved just a bit. the atmosphere is really nice and ideal to have something to eat, or just a coffee and a sweet.
