Lauded confectionary with gilded salons & frescos, featuring a bakeshop, a posh eatery & garden....
We stopped in with no reservations and got a table in late afternoon. Lovely place. We had Chai Lattes that were the best I have ever had. We didnt have any cake but they had a wonderful variety. Our server was lovely and kind. Nice place. Lots of stairs. I would go back.
Gerstner K. u. K. Hofzuckerbäcker is a hard-to-pronounce and rather unassuming establishment from the outside, located literally across the street from the famous Vienna State Opera. The abbreviation is no coincidence: it stands for “Imperial and Royal Court Confectioner” — a title Gerstner received back in 1873 from the imperial family. And so, once you go upstairs, you suddenly find yourself not just in a café, but in a traditional 19th-century Viennese pastry salon. Mirrored tables and soft armchairs invite you to linger and study the interior — and there is plenty to look at: high ceilings, stucco work, mirrors, frescoes, massive chandeliers, and patterned fireplaces. And the desserts are a story of their own. A strudel after which you will sigh sadly about all others: “Not bad, but not Viennese, of course.” Warm, apple-filled, without unnecessary tricks, with the right number of layers and a magnificent vanilla sauce that you want to eat on its own with a spoon (and not share with anyone). This place does not try to please. It simply exists — calmly, confidently, perhaps even a little arrogantly. But if you suddenly notice that you’re sitting a bit too straight, listening closely to a Mozart symphony in the background, or exchanging pleasantries with the imposing waiters, then Gerstner has done everything right.
Well worth the visit for the atmosphere alone. We were in the Café part, one floor above the street level shop. Food was at least a 4 … just couldn’t go with the 5. Service was friendly and again, the atmosphere was perfect to grab a great cup of coffee in whatever Viennese version you like and a solid dessert.
We visited Gerstner Café in Vienna for coffee and cake as a group of six. They kindly reserved a special area for our group, so the waiting time was short and well organized. The wait was absolutely worth it—the café is beautiful, elegant, and full of classic Viennese charm. The cakes and coffee were delicious, and everything was served with care. Our waiter was friendly and attentive, which made the experience even more enjoyable. We had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend a visit.
It’s a beautiful place, easily accessible from Karlsplatz and Stephansplatz U-Bahn stations (U1 line). The café has three floors, each nicely decorated and full of charm. My tip: when going upstairs, take a look at the cakes on display so you know which one to order — the menu unfortunately doesn’t have pictures. I ordered a chocolate cake and a cappuccino, and both were excellent. We sat facing the opera building and really enjoyed the view. Highly recommended!
