Founded in 1894, this cafe is known for its chocolate with churros....
This place is not what it used to be… The wait time has gotten better because they let the churros sit in the cold and gone soggy before serving them. Go to any stand and order some fresh ones and you’d be happier. I promise. The staffs are okay but clearly overworked. The restaurant looks charming which is the only good thing you can say about it.
This place was wildly busy and we came with a lot of excitement and eagerness as we were told churros are really good here... however the atmosphere is unfortunately awful. I don't know if the staff are overworked or treated badly by the owner or whatever, but they clearly didn't want to be there. The person we ordered from barely made eye contact and was so unbelievably disinterested, it really brought the vibe down. On top of that, their seating system is absolutely terrible. You need to order first and then receive a ticket, only then are you allowed to sit down at a table. Multiple times while we were there, we saw customers (including ourselves) go to sit down but were called out by the staff to not sit down yet and that came with more coldness. On top of that, even when you have a ticket, and there is free seating, the waiter will actively tell you to go back in line and wait until he has cleaned the table and checked our ticket. The interior is not big enough to justify such a system as it would save everyone time without it. The food itself was not bad, but nothing special and we felt like leaving the second we sat down as the staff were so disconnected and clearly unhappy, that the same mood is unfortunately quite infectious. I'm sure the staff are under a lot of pressure and are stressed, so I have some sympathy for them, but for people coming from all over the world to visit the beautiful city of Madrid, where churros are everywhere, this place is definitely one I would say you should miss. What's-more, the waiter was shocked at my ice cream order in a churros place and made a telling face of shock/disgust while he gave it to me. Honestly it's just very cold in here, the real power of customer service can be felt here, because there isn't any. To be fair to the staff, they didn't do/say anything outwardly negative, it's more the fact that they clearly don't care about where they are and that's sad. My suggestion to the owner - be nicer to your staff so they aren't made to resent what they do!
Definitely need to try their churros when you’re visiting Madrid. Their hot chocolate is one of the best hot chocolates I have had. Very rich, creamy, and decadent whilst not overly sweet. It is the perfect pair to dip your warm churros. And of course, their churros didn’t disappoint. They were warm, buttery, and flaky. I would say it should be on your to-do list when you visit Madrid.
Churros with chocolate dip were amazing. The perfect way to start the morning with a boost of energy. The churros were crispy and not greasy at all. However, I personally prefer the larger version (I can’t remember the name); it’s softer and absorbs the chocolate better. I’d recommend trying both. I arrived around 9:00 a.m., and it wasn’t crowded at all, so there was no wait. Plus, this place has many branches throughout Madrid.
What an epic experience to be watching so many people from around the world enjoying chocolate dipped churros at this historic site for so many months and finally arriving in Madrid and having the opportunity to experience it ourselves! It definitely did not disappoint. In fact it was even better than we imagined! The churros are slightly salty and crispy without being oily and the chocolate is not too sweet and very rich and lucious. It's a perfect combination! The staff are all very warm and friendly. We had an opportunity to sit down stairs and the atmosphere was very charming! We have another 4 days and I have a feeling this was just the first of several visits! 😉 We went back another night when there das a huge line up. Although it took an hour to get in, everything was organized and orderly and it actually felt pretty quick when chatting with friends and anticipating the fresh crispy churros and plump fluffy porras! We got in by midnight and had another wonderful experience! Thanks for the memories!
