Weekday mornings are the quietest
Really disappointed with this place. They advertise themselves as a gluten-free restaurant, but the menu says in small print that the kitchen may use ingredients that contain gluten. That’s not what most people expect when they see “dedicated gluten free,” and it is absolutely NOT safe for celiacs. I’ve also seen posts in Hungarian gluten-free Facebook groups where someone mentioned a waitress saying they use “may contain” items because “no one got sick so far.” That’s not true in my case. I got sick with stomach cramps after eating there. The only other thing I had that day was plain yogurt in the morning. It wasn't the yogurt. Other dedicated GF places and regular people like us manage to check labels, avoid “may contain” items, and make sure our food is truly gluten free. A restaurant that markets itself as basically dedicated gluten free should absolutely be able to do the same. This feels misleading and unsafe.
I returned to Herbar for a second visit, hoping for a more positive experience, especially since I appreciate the concept of a mostly vegan and gluten-free menu. Unfortunately, the service again felt distant and lacking warmth. We arrived about an hour before closing while already in the neighbourhood. When we walked in the interaction felt cold and unenthusiastic. We were quickly told that we needed to order soon due to closing time, which is understandable, but the tone made us feel more like an inconvenience than welcomed guests. The food was ok overall. The waffles with pistachio cream and fruit were enjoyable and well presented, while the avocado toast felt quite basic and comparable to something easily made at home. Despite the branding around health conscious options, the menu itself did not feel very healthy, and the pricing seemed high for the simplicity and portion sizes of the dishes. Another detail that affected the experience was having to ask for separate cutlery for dessert, which appeared to be received with some annoyance. During the meal, no one checked in to ask how the food was. When we left, the staff did say goodbye, but without eye contact or any real engagement, which made the farewell feel impersonal and and again cold and rude. Overall, the service came across as polite but cold and detached. I genuinely wanted to enjoy this place given its concept and location, but the lack of warmth, attentiveness, and perceived value for the price made the experience feel disappointing for a second visit.
Sweet place, everything gluten free so felt very safe, Waffles were huge plenty to share! Really cosy with lovely staff Photo attached is one of the two spice apple compote and peanut butter waffle.
Pistachio waffles were great, “pulled pork” sendwich was just ok. Bounty coffee was amazing! Service was however very bad - we were sitting outside and not any of 3 workers never came out when we were finished..
We ordered creamy broccoli soup, the snack plate and waffles in this cute little place. The broccoli soup came really quickly and it was actually really delicious. The snack plate took some time to arrive, which is understandable since there are a lot of veggies to cut. The veggies were fresh and the bread and the cheese were really good. The tomato salsa and the guacamole not so much, they lacked taste. It took a lot of time to get the waffles, I was about to go ask about them, but then they finally arrived. The gluten free waffle itself was like cardboard, not very good, but fortunately the ice cream and the syrup along with berries made it desserty enough. The staff was super nice though, so props for them for being really really nice. I wish everyone was that nice in Budapest.
