The coffee was delicious and so were the croissants. When we walked in 10 minutes after they operated, we thought we would be greeted by a fresh happy person. She had no other customers in the building. Maybe it’s a cultural difference. No one is overly warm like in other countries. Maybe it’s because we don’t speak the language. I am the kind of person that cleans up their table. I put my coffee cups back at the counter and she never acknowledged it. The prices were good $10.90 for 2 coffees and 2 croissants. The place is cute. They do add in 10%service fee.
Was not expecting to have such a good coffee at the affordable price! Cozy, calm atmosphere. Service was kind and attentive. One of the better Cafe Frei locations. :)
Came based on reviews. Upon arrival, there was only a girl working at the register. From the beginning, the energy was heavy. The elderly folks in front of us were asking questions, and she seemed irritated by them. That got under my skin. That could have been my parents. Once we came up to register, she was short, made no eye contact, had zero customer service skills, and was overall just rude. Shortly after, she got some help from a young lady who seemed timid and even scared of the rude employee. Once helped arrived she then moved to being a barista. Throughout the 30 minutes we spent there, her attitude became worse. As a barista, customers were asking questions, and she was irritated, telling everyone, “You’re going to have to wait, I have six orders ahead of you. She was slamming things, pounding the cups, and so on. The young employee brought her a receipt for a new order, and she threw it on the counter ruthlessly. We could not enjoy our coffee because her attitude towards everyone was just too much. I purposely took a picture of her (attached) to make you all aware, if you see her run. Joking, just do not be surprised if her lack of customer skills.
After another local high priced but not that tasty coffee place, Cafe Frei was a delight!!! They have really nice special coffee varieties with reasonable price. 2 special coffees, 1 hot chocolate, 1 ice coffee, 1 tiramisu and 1 chocolate cake costed 7000 HUF.
We visited Café Frei (Váci utca 74, Budapest), the first café we stopped by in the city. The staff were very kind, especially one young woman who, besides speaking English, even greeted us in Spanish. As we left, she smiled and said: “Have a good day”. She was very friendly, with a modern haircut and a constant smile. She patiently explained the different savory pastries. We ordered a Flat White (950 Ft ≈ €2.4), an orange juice Rostos Toma 0.33L (590 Ft ≈ €1.5), and two savory baskets: the Mediterranean (650 Ft ≈ €1.6) and the cheese & ham basket (650 Ft ≈ €1.6). Prices were quite reasonable and the place was very clean. In Hungary tipping is optional, but we happily left 10% (284 Ft ≈ €0.7) because the service was excellent. 👉 We paid a total of 3,124 Ft (≈ €7.8) by card. I definitely recommend this café: great service, fair prices, and a very pleasant atmosphere.
