I had an amazing experience at MOKKA SPECIALTY COFFEE S.A. in central Athens. I ordered a traditional Greek coffee (metrios — lightly sweet), which they brew the old-fashioned way in hot sand. It was fascinating to watch. The person preparing the coffee was incredibly attentive and meticulous, constantly moving the brass ibrik (briki) through the hot sand so it heated evenly without burning. It took a few minutes, but it was absolutely worth the wait. The coffee itself was bold, rich, and very distinctive — one of the best I’ve had. It was served on a tray in the briki along with a cup and some loukoumi (Turkish delight), which made the whole experience feel very traditional and special. For around €3–€4, I thought it was excellent value. The café has a traditional atmosphere and was quite busy, but it never felt hectic. Locals were sitting inside and outside, slowly enjoying their coffee and conversation. Even though it was busy, there were always a few seats free, the noise level was low, and the staff were very friendly, welcoming, and attentive wherever you sat. It’s also a nice place to grab takeaway, though if you’re in a rush you may want to order filtered coffee since Greek coffee takes a few minutes to prepare. This place is located on Athinas Street near the Central Market in the heart of Athens, and it’s often chosen by local tour guides to introduce visitors to authentic Greek coffee — and after tasting it, I can see why. If you’ve never tried traditional Greek coffee, this is an excellent place to experience it for the first time — and even if you’re a regular coffee drinker, it’s something special.
This place is very famous for its coffee and has won many prizes and accolades. I had a vanilla roibus tea. They had some of the best yoghurt ever with rose petal jam. I would def recommend. Staff were excellent
For a real Greek coffee experience, this is the place. It’s not cheap, but the coffee is prepared and served in a briki, which we appreciated. You can tell it’s popular with both locals and tourists. There was a small mistake with the sugar level in my son’s coffee, but it was remade right away without any issue. Yes, I’d recommend this spot.
The service was very nice. I came very early in the morning to watch the market open and have a quiet experience. I had a cheese pie - Tiropita me fi and a traditional coffee. Pictured here.
A lovely café serving traditional coffee made on hot sand. The coffee was great — smooth, well-balanced, not acidic. My highlight was the yogurt with pistachio (marmalade?) — something I’d never tried before, but delicious. It’s clearly a tourist spot (you’ll see many guide-led groups), so the atmosphere doesn’t feel fully “local,” although the flavors certainly are. While the coffee is good, you can find similar quality elsewhere if you look so it is a bit pricey. A bit disappointing that the cafe had almost no foam you‘d expect in a good mocca. Ordering via QR code at the table is super easy, and the staff are happy to explain things if you ask.
