Palatial neo-Renassiance theater for classical & experimental plays, musicals & dance performances....
Stunning Neo-Renaissance theater with Art Nouveau elements, a well-curated range of plays, and a warm, inviting and accessible atmosphere. We’ve come here several times over the years to enjoy interesting productions in the marvelous Grote Zaal (a feast for the eyes). As always, some were better than others, but what remained the same throughout was the grandeur of the place, its friendly staff, and the joy of engaging with diverse artistic reflections on our societies and the challenges they face. We also appreciate the fact that the theater hosts a range of international co-productions (for example “Der Bus nach Dachau” with Schauspielhaus Bochum or, more recently, “HOPE” with Thalia-Theater Hamburg) which help to deepen the aforementioned reflections by providing a second perspective - one that goes beyond borders. A great opportunity for further engagement are the discussions between directors, actors and audiences, held in one of the foyers after selected performances. To conclude the evening and round off the experience, we’d recommend a drink or dessert in the beautiful setting of the ITA Brasserie on the ground floor.
The main hall features classic European décor with ornate details and a large stage. Even though it’s spacious, there isn’t a bad seat in the house — the view from the balcony is just as good as from the floor. The second hall is modern and perfectly constructed, with great visibility from every seat. It’s an ideal space for dance performances. At the entrance, there’s a lively bistro with a simple, crowd-pleasing menu where everyone can find something. Further inside, there’s a bar for anyone who wants a drink before or after the show. The venue offers free cloakroom service in the basement, with fast and reliable staff, as well as self-service lockers — though those fill up quickly, so it’s best to arrive early. For many performances, complimentary drinks are offered during intermission, including wine, beer, and soft drinks. A great cultural spot overall.
One of our favorite places in Amsterdam. We like to eat, drink and watch the people around.
I am amazed by this theater, it has so much character. I saw a play about Alfa Romeo and since then, i keep looking at alfista’s everyhere. I loved everything about the building.
This building is a museum in its self with grand hallways, chandeliers and interesting artwork hanging around the building. It is clearly styled in art nouveau and prepairs the cultural mind before your see your theatre. Mind you, if you have front row balcony seats, be prepared to for limited legroom! Definitely worth the visit!
